[ARCVIEW-L] SUM: ArcView Project
May 11 2001

Thanks to all that responded, especially Dave from NYDOT! I really appreciate everyones input. It was comforting to know how everyone else has handled a similiar problem so that when I finally did get to talk to ESRI I wasn't wondering if they were just taking a shot in the dark. It seems that a printer conflict was the problem. It turns out that the user changed her to default printer to the HP5000. Since that printer is a B&W we don't use that for ArcView we simply changed the default printer back to the original setting (HP Laser4) and it works. We didn't find this out until we uninstalled and reinstalled AV. Technical Support at ESRI (Travis) recommended that we reboot in safe mode since that severes the connection to outside devices, but that was unsuccessful for us, because our project resided on the network and safemode severed our connection to the server to. He also recommended that we change our default printer to the Brother HJ100, because that one is known to have no conflicts. If that didn't work, (which it did) he recommended that we download the newest driver for our video card. I only add this info, in the off chance someone ever has a similiar problem. Again, thanks to everone who responded, I'll add there responses and the original message at the bottom of the message. It was really comforting to know that you all are out there all around the world! THANKS!!!!

Original Message:We are currently experiencing some sort of oddity. We have a windows 98 machine that refuses to open large projects. Each attempt to open a particular project yields an unpredictable error message. Sometimes it is a Segmentation Violation & other times a floating point error. No particular pattern to the messages either. The screwier part is that the project opens without a hitch on the NT Workstation. It is imperitive that we figure this out because we have only the two machines and we each need to be working on our respective machines.

If anyone can offer help I will be glad to sum! Thanks in advance!!!

Hi Kim,
I'm not sure if this is your issue, but we were having problems opening projects in 98 that contained spaces in the file name. For example, if your project is located at c:\my projects\proj.apr, you should name it c:\myprojects\proj.apr.

Volker from ProCRM IT-Systems AG in Germany writes:
Hello Kim,
your trouble sounds quite familiar to me. I can recall a number of APRs sized significantly greater than say 10 MB, that were unhandable with the Win9x toy OSs (irregular error messages, nothing systematic). In agreement with your observation, those APRs caused no problems with WinNT.

My conclusion is:
If you do professional work you should use professional OSs like WinNT.

Alvin from Biological Research Associates/CognoCartaGIS in Florida writes:
We have had similar problems when we had a mixed Win95 and WinNT environment.

Actually, when an NT user would work on a project, followed by the Win95 user, the next NT user to hit the apr would delete the entire apr. Finally determined that Win95 fails to close the apr correctly. As we have no Win98 users (all NT and Win2000), we have not experienced that problem again. Have your IS people check the aprs and make certain that they have been closed properly (with relation to NT EOF markers).

Hope this might point you in the right direction.

Sorry to hear about your ArcView-Win98 troubles. The first thing that came to mind was that your printer settings are corrupted - I have seen this problem before when projects fail to open. The project bombs when the status bar reads "Retrieving printer settings..." or something like that. I think you can delete your default printer, reboot, and reopen the project. If that works, then try reinstalling the desired printer.

I have found that AV will give strange error messages when it is running out of memory on the computer. Make sure you have plenty of hard drive space and virtual memory on the 98 computer.

Tony from clear.net.nz writes:
I have had the same issue regarding the floating point exceptions. My projects are not overly large - largest being under 2meg but the problem I seem to have is opening from the shortcuts. Once that happens with a particular shortcut, it seems to be stuffed. I can still open the project but not from the short cut. Under NT - no worries. From a 95 or 98 workstation, I have problems. Interesting to here what 2000 is doing.

Daniel from the University of Maryland writes: Have you tried uninstalling, then re-installing both the OS and the ArcView program? I had to do this once. It was a pain to uninstall Windows 98, but for some reason I had no problem after that. Chalk it up to MSoft for giving such bizarre and random bugs...
