A high stable oil price, political instability in many oil-producing regions in the World, and relatively close distances to western markets have resulting in a growing interest from many supermajors and majors for exploration in the Arctic and other high latitude areas, including possible future petroleum provinces in Greenland.
In recent years, exploration focus in Greenland has mainly been on central West Greenland with several licensing rounds and as a promising result, the highest number of licences (>10) ever seen in Greenland.
Activities in the coming years are likely to be directed more towards the North-West (Baffin Bay) and to the North-East Greenland shelf. Both of these regions offer very promising exploration targets but also major technical challenges due to many months of ice coverage every year.
As preparation for new exploration, data acquisition and geological and geophysical work is in progress in these two regions. Both of the regions benefit from excellent outcrops in the neighbouring onshore areas and a rapidly increasing geophysical database offshore. At the same time, the potential is being evaluated as part of the "Circum-Arctic Petroleum Appraisal" by USGS, partly in collaboration with GEUS.
The presentation will review some of the new data, results and models for exploration in some of the most important future petroleum provinces with particular focus on structural and depositional history, stratigraphy, petroleum systems, and the most critical risks for exploration.
