GEOMIND stands for Geophysical Multilingual Internet-Driven Information Service which is supported a two-year project sponsored by European Commission and co-financed by the eContentplus programme. The project was contributed by 12 partners and organizations from the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, and Slovakia. The GEOMIND system was developed to meet the needs of people and organizations who will potentially use geophysical data. It is a web based information service (portal) to find geophysical data from across Europe. It provides a multilingual platform to utilize geophysical data without a limitation of national boundaries. It is addressed to governmental and local authorites, exploration, mining and constructing companies, insurance companies, researches, students, and individual citizens. The system in the first version provides geophysical meta and header data concerning vertical electrical sounding, time domain electromagnetics, magnetotelluric and telluric, gravimetry, magnetometry, radiometry, complex airborn, seismics, seismological data, borehole logging, and petrophysical data. For meta- and header data exchange the GEOMIND Metadata Profile is used that is an extension to the ISO 19115 metadata standard. For detailed geophysical data exchange a new geophysical markup language (XML) is being developed based on the General Geophysical Data Model.
Multilinguality of the GEOMIND portal comprises the project website (www.geomind.eu), the GEOMIND Metadata profile, the multilingual thesaurus for geophysics, and the multilingual system interface. The portal works in the following way: several organizations will provide their geophysical databases through the GEOMIND portal; then an individual interested in geophysical data will be able to search (textually or graphically) the GEOMIND system of data available from data providers; and once the user has found the data he or she will be able to directly place their order with the data provider on the GEOMIND portal. The project will also contribute to the goals of the European Spatial Data Infrastructure (INSPIRE). Beyond the GEOMIND project, its products will assist with communication, organization and collaboration between different EU nations.
