The urban geological survey is an important field in the geological investigation of China. The great achievements have been made in the experimental studies such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Nanjing and so on. In this paper, the new progresses on the urban geological survey, especially the research results and their applications for the three-dimensional urban geological survey in Shanghai will be described. The studies are composed of five research topics and two model surveys, which are the survey for the three-dimensional geological structure and the suitability evaluation on the underground space development, the investigation on the geological disasters and the prevention research, the investigation and evaluation on the environmental geochemistry, the evaluation for the geological environmental capacity and the applications, the development of the information platform for Shanghai urban geology and the advisory service systems, and the geological survey in the area of the Shanghai World Exposition and the geological structure research of Lingang new city. According to the three programmed districts of ˇ°central city"Cnew city"Csuburbsˇ±, a three-dimensional geological structure involving the basic geology, the quaternary geology and the engineering geology and a visual city geological information system have been established. They play a foundation for estimating the land utility, the underground space development, the city geological environment capacity investigation, and for making the standards for dividing the urban engineering geological layers. The results obtained have been applied to draw up the plans for the underground space concept of Shanghai central city, and the constructions of Lingang new city, the world exposition buildings and other new districts. They have also been applied to the prediction and control of the land subsidence, dynamic evolution of the reserved soil resource, and developing the geochemical indicators to evaluate the ecological residence.

Key words: urban geology, geological disasters, geological structure, geochemistry, environment capacity, geological information system
