The Geologic Survey of Italy is partner of the OneGeology initiative, supplying a national geological coverage in digital format produced like web-service aimed to the standardization and homogenization of the GeoSciML sharing data language. The testing has been carried out using the 1:500,000 scale geologic map of Italy realized by the Geologic Survey in 1980's, obtained by the synthesis of the 1:100,000 scale geologic map of Italy completed in that period.
This map has been elaborated following the litho-chronostratigraphic criterion, unfortunately it does not contain the structural elements and therefore it does not allow the complete testing of the relative guidelines. To adapt itself to the GeoSciML model schema have been shown all the attribute storage in the data bank.
The geodatabase of such map has been recently re-shaped implementing the attributes in double language (English / Italian) and trying to align it to the international standards both lithological and chronological.

A further effort has been made from the web-server side; the Geological Survey cartographic portal, that distribute WMS and WFS (OCG standard) services, has been supported by a open-source wrapper Framework ("Cocoon") that facilitate the encoding task.

In this way through simple xslt (EXtensible Stylesheet Language Trasformation) files the request sand by the GeoSciML client, are codified and realigned in a new form addressing them towards the own database; the response of application services (ArcIMS) are sand back to Cocoon that serialize the response in a layout in accordance with the GeoSciML outlines from another xslt file placed at the server output.

At the present we are working to make available for OneGeology initiative, through GeoSciML language, the new Geologic Map of Italy 1:1,000,000 scale that is under completion; this map derives from the elaboration of the new geological data derives from the national geologic cartography project 1:50,000 scale (CARG project) and that is covered by structural elements too.
