In Japan, the groundwater contamination site by nitrate nitrogen is increasing?also at the agricultural area, resulted in big problem to drinking water in rural area. The lithostratigraphic unit is an important role of groundwater flow and distribution, because of the same hydro-staratigraphic unit as lithostratigraphic unit in the study area. In generally, there is a tendency that the nitrate nitrogen concentration in the groundwater is low at paddy field in alluvial lowland in Japan. On the other hand, there is the phenomenon that the concentration of the first aquifer is high and the second aquifer is low in the upland, but there is also the phenomenon that, at the area where first aquiclude does not exist is only the second aquifer, resulting in spreading contamination to the entire aquifer. We will show the typical study on the phenomena of the mentioned above as follows. Nitrate nitrogen contamination of groundwater has been a serious problem in Sawara area, Katori City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. As the city government has surveyed the current situation on the groundwater contamination since 1998, but, could not grasp clearly the mechanism of the contamination, we studied it.
