How to choose a representation of geological data on a map is one of important map-making decisions, especially, for a geological compiled map by many participants and covered huge areas, such as the 1:5M International Geological Map of Asia (IGMA5000). The IGMA5000 is a cooperation program under the Commission for the Geological Map of the World (CGMW) and supported by the China Geological Survey. The IGMA 5000 compilation is undertaken by the related Subcommissions for CGMW and the related geological surveys of Asian countries. The map will cover the whole of Asia and its adjacent regions. The IGMA5000 is a vector-based GIS. It will run in ArcGIS 9.2 platform. A uniform file database is designed by the Editorial Group. In order to represent the different geological features on the map, a temporary legend was designed by the Editorial Group. The geological features will be presented on the map by different colors and patterns not only according to theirs geological time, but also according to their main lithology. An ArcMap style library named "IGMA5000.style", which includes the all filled colors and filled patterns, for polygon features is designed to standardize map symbolization according to the Legend of IGMA5000. Each item in the style library has a unique name and is classified into different categories. A field named "Symbol" is designed to record a term which describes the symbolization of the features. The term in the symbol field must precisely match the name used in the style. In ArcMap, styles are applied to features using the "Match to symbols in a style"method under the Symbology tab. A button has been designed in ArcMap to achieve this function easily.
A Data Input Program is also developed to input the attribute data. In this Data Input Program, the symbol field can be automatically generated by the information in other fields according the rules of the legend.
The style can be designed in ArcMap. A program named MakeStyleAPP.exe is published on the ESRI Developer Network. This program demonstrates how to create a style gallery from an access database. Based on this program, we developed another program in Visual Basic to reedit the style library quickly and easily.
Using the ArcMap styles to symbolize the geological features is a convenient method. The compilers do not need to do a time-consuming process to design the complex colors and patterns for different geological features in ArcMap by themselves. In the final joint map, if the compilers do not satisfy the color and the pattern, the symbolization can be adjusted by reediting the style library and remarching with the style library.
