At present, there are two main trends of medium- and small-scale hydrogeological mapping in Russia. The first one is compilation of sheet hydrogeological maps at 1:200,000 and 1:1,000,000 scales in international numbering. The second trend is compilation of map sets of large hydrogeological structures (the Volga-Khoper and other artesian basins) at 1:500,000 - 1:1,000,000 scale. Structural (basin) approach to hydrogeological mapping was implemented for the Volga-Khoper artesian basin of the II order.
Volga-Khoper artesian basin lies in the southeast East European artesian area. It has a rather complicated structure, which is determined by a junction of a number of tectonic structures of different character, Voronezh and Volga-Uralian anteclises, Caspian and Moscow syneclises.
Complexity of the Basin hydrological conditions, abundance of groundwater resources of different purposes and a high level of hydrogeological knowledge became the reason for digital mapping method development as applied to hydrogeological structures.
Conceptual mapping framework of the Volga-Khoper artesian basin consisted in determination of the hydrogeological map as a computer (digital) map - informational analytical system based on GIS principles, which includes a sufficient volume of multiparametrical data enabling to analyze, model and predict a hydrogeological setting. The latter is possible only in the course of switching to a fundamentally different system of displaying cartographic information, layer-by-layer or 3D geological mapping.
A set of digital maps of the Basin territory at scale 1:1,000,000 including geological and hydrogeological maps of the Pre-Neogene, Neogene and Quaternary formations, geoecological maps and a map of groundwater resources has been compiled using such approach.
Compilation of a set of special-purpose hydrogeological and geoecological maps at scale 1:1,000,000 is realized for the Volga-Khoper artesian basin as a geological-cartographic informational base, which ensures formation of a single informational space in the sphere of subsurface management within a common system of informational support of managerial decision taken at the state level.
The term "map" is equal to "informational system" realized as GIS; the databases included into attributive tables allow considering such product as an expert system focused on resolving various subsurface management tasks, where both specialized organizations and management bodies in the field of nature management at the federal, regional and local levels in the Russian Federation constituent entities play the part of experts (or product users).
The most important element of an informational system is the possibility of its constant replenishment in the course of the State monitoring of the subsurface state in the Russian Federation provided the tasks of interrelation between the factographic databases of State monitoring of geological environment and databases of cartographic information are resolved.
