The International Lithosphere Programme (ILP) has decided 2005 to renew its Task Force on Sedimentary Basins. The New Task Force VI "Sedimentary Basins" includes ∼ 100 active members from 34 countries. The scientific objectives of this Task Force address interactions between deep earth and surface processes, i.e., thermicity, fluid circulations and transfers, fluid-rock interactions, interactions between tectonics, erosion, sedimentation and climate.

The aims of the Task Force are (i) to provide a platform to exchange views between scientists involved in the study of sedimentary basins with different aspects and scales; (ii) to promote international collaborative projects integrating surface and deep processes for regional case studies;(iii) to promote regular meetings involving colleagues from universities, research institutes as well as the industry and (iiii) to provide support for young scientists (PhD and post-docs) to participate in the activities of this international network.

For the time interval 2005-2010, yearly workshops and field seminars on different continents are held hosting about 100 participants. During the past three years the members of the Task Force have met in sessions at international scientific meetings and at specific workshops dedicated to Thrust Belts and Foreland Basins (2005, Rueil-Malmaison Paris), to The History of convergent and passive margins in the Polar Realm (2006, Quebec, Canada) and to The Geology of Vertical Movements: Uplift and Subsidence, Mountains and Basins (2007, Marrakech, Morrocco).

For each of the workshops a proceedings volume documents the scientific outcome of which a summary will be presented. In the coming years workshops will address The architecture and evolution of the Gulf of Mexico, other Mexican basins, as well as sub-Andean basins and Circum-Pacific margins.(2008, Ensenada, Mexico) and The Basins of the Middle East (2009, AbuDhabi, Emirates).
