For the last few decades a large number of regional geochemistry mapping projects were conducted covering NW-part of Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
The main purpose of the NEG project is compilation the Atlas of geochemical maps in the scale of 1:5000000 in order to clear up an environmental status and mineral potential on territory of north-western Russia, Finland, Scandinavian and Baltic countries. This compilation is based on the complex analysis and interpretation of results from all there investigations.
An integrated computer database was developed for systematical storage of the whole dataset is being processed in the NEG project. It consists of the following unit: - depository of results from regional geochemical mapping projects. It contains projects data as it is without any additional transformation; - meta-database with detailed project description. It contains general project information, descriptions of sampled medias and analytical investigations; - NEG project database. It contains analytical results from all regional geochemical projects after special transformation. These data were used for the purpose of complex analysis and compilation of resulting maps in NEG project; - GIS-based set of digital maps. It includes basemaps of natural and anthropogenic features on the project area and resulting project map of environmental status and minerogenic potential of the territory, which were compiled of the basis of complex analysis and interpretation of regional geochemical data.
NEG project database contains information from 27 national and international geochemical projects. Based on these data maps of spatial distribution of chemical elements and their associations in 8 natural medias, ecogeochemical map and exploration geochemical maps covering the whole project area were compiled. The meta-information of geochemical project is now available on http://www.noreurgeoch.net/.
