Fruska gora-potential Geopark

Potential Geopark is located 80 km northwest from Belgrade, capital of Serbia, in Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. Vojvodina represents a form of territorial autonomy within the Republic of Serbia, cover 21.506 km2 northern part of Serbia. Over two million people live in Vojvodina, comprising 27 nations, national minorities and ethnic groups.
Potential Geopark overtake abroad area of Mountain Fruska gora (highest peak Crveni Cot 539 m altitude), covering area of 80000 ha, included the largest part of National Park Fruska gora (25525 ha). Fruska gora is proclaimed a National Park in 1960 and represents one of five National Parks in Serbia. In potential Geopark is located forty settlements with more than 100.000 inhabitants, they are occupying with agriculture and last years ethno tourism to.
The Fruska gora massif consists of various rock types originating from the times of Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Tertiary and Quaternary. Such complex geological structure is enriched by fossil flora and fauna preserved in deposits of the bottom of the former Pannonian Sea. Thanks to numerous fossil remains, this "Pannonian Island" is a distinctive reflection of the geological past of the Pannonian-Carpathian basin.
The recent wild life is also very rich. Flora of Fruska gora is very rich and diverse and comprises about 1.500 species. Fruska gora fauna is rich and this refers primarily to ornitho-fauna with more then 200 species.
Fruska gora is know for its 17 Orthodox monasteries that have been built in the period from 15th to 18th century. That is why this mountain is also known as the second Holy Mountain apropos Serbian Atos.
Inclusion Fruska gora in European Geopark Network is cooperative initiative of: Ministry of Environmental Protection, National Park Fruska gora, Provincial Secretariat for Energy and Mineral Resources, Faculty of Mining and Geology, Nature Protection Institute of Serbia, Geological Institute of Serbia. Base of Management structure Future Geopark will consist represents of previously mentioned institutions, which are participate in preparation and monitoring during the process of accession to European Geopark Network.
Important role in future Geopark have Educational centre in the Iriski Venac and three smaller info-centers. All events in Geopark will be present in each mentioned centre. Like a part of activities Educational centre will be organized special courses, presentations, shows and other performances.
Important segment of development local community in potential Geopark will be incorporation natural and cultural historical potentials in tourism offering (hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, ethno tourisms etc.).
