The region of the Abaucán River basin has been scarcely studied from the geomorphologic perspective; that is why in this work a detailed description of the current geoformas and their genesis is accomplished standing out through the geomorphologic map its distribution in the landscape in the southern sector of Tinogasta Department, located to the west of the provincial capital city. In this work, also, the paleo-environmental evolution of an intermountain valley is analysed, situated in the threshold of the catamarquenian Puna, integrating the morphogenetic and morphodynamic information, together with the lithostratigraphic, neotectonic, paleoclimatic and archaeological aspects in order to define a preliminary and tentative frame about its evolution. The tentative aspect of the conclusions is due to the lack of absolute datings, a limitation that is intended to minimize, extrapolating the existent ones in other areas with similar paleogeomorphologic and paleo-environmental evolution in the southern region of the Argentine Northwest. Besides, the multidisciplinary interaction, specially the morphochronology integrated to the lithostratigraphic, tectonic and archaeological aspects, contribute to define with greater objectivity the diverse stages of the environmental evolution of the area during the last geological period.
